Foxtail Fern – Easy to Grow and Bear

Foxtail Fern has a unique asymmetrical appearance. These fern-type plants have narrow, arching pumpkins-like stems with needle-like leaf surfaces that appear delicate and soft. However, these plants produce large red berries and blooms with lovely white flowers. Because of their asymmetrical and miniature nature, foxtail ferns are usually difficult for beginners to grow and are often passed over or left on the vine to eventually take over a backyard.

Foxtail Fern Care

If you want to learn how to take care of a foxtail fern, one of the first things you will need to know is that these plants do not like a lot of sunlight. They also require a great deal of moisture, so you should never plant them in places with high water activity like ponds or pools. They also are very sensitive to soil acidity and cannot tolerate acidic soils much at all. They are best kept in the most humid conditions possible, even if this means bringing them into your house when it’s raining. For their roots, put up a plastic cocoon around the plant to protect them from cold winds. This way they will stay healthy and grow at the same time.

When the weather gets hot in the spring, move your fern indoors immediately to a cool but dark place, like a cupboard or closet. During this heat period, it’s important to fertilize your plants every two weeks during the growing season and use a fertilizer that contains phosphorous. Phosphorous encourages root growth and blooming. For larger ferns, a light application of fertilizer mixed with water can be used after the first frost.

Another way to propagate your fern is by cutting off some of its old, hardy leaves and tissue. When you repeatedly cut off pieces of leaf tissue, the plant will produce new shoots called rhizomes. These rhizomes will eventually root down into the soil where they will help the plant to reproduce its rhizome root system.

Suitable Environment for Foxtail Fern

Suitable Environment for Foxtail Fern

Foxtail fern have been known to do really well in both cold and hot climates. In cooler climates, where it experiences less rainfall, it flourishes. You should not keep it in extremely warm environments. As for extremely cold climates, you can leave it outdoors all year long, as long as you cover it with a protective sheet during the winter months. However, it will become dormant in these colder environments.

Do not mist the fern during humid days and avoid overly humid conditions indoors. The excessive moisture causes the roots of the fern to break down. You can encourage the fern to do better in a humid indoor environment by giving it regular watering. You can do this by using a humidifier, especially if your room is not air-conditioned. You can also use a dehumidifier if the air conditioning is working too hard or is letting the humidity builds up in the house.

For well-draining soil, you need a slightly acidic soil mix. This combination of soil and fertilizer should be applied regularly. A well-draining soil encourages root growth, so the fern will do well in any conditions. But, remember that it is better to plant the fern in partial shade since it is a woody plant. Direct sunlight can burn the tender leaves.

Foxtail fens do not like direct sun, so you should place them in shaded areas. You can also prevent the roots from growing wet by covering the tubers with plastic. Covering the roots will prevent the foxtail fern from drying out, but the plastic will trap moisture in the roots. The best thing about this form is that it is easy to grow and bear; it can grow up to twelve inches in diameter and five to six feet tall.
