Before selling your Xbox One or passing it on to someone else, you should perform a factory reset. This will erase all your personal data. Users who get Xbox One must go through the first setup process again and log in with their Microsoft account.
If you have not reset the Xbox One’s factory settings and you can no longer access it, you cannot remotely erase your Xbox One’s data. However, you can remotely lock the Xbox profile, ensure that no one can use it, and access its associated personal data without a password. We will explain in detail how to lock your personal data at the end of this article.
How to wipe your Xbox One
To reset the console, power on the controller and press the Xbox button in the center of the controller. This will take you to the dashboard.
If the Xbox One does not respond for some reason, press the Xbox button on the front of the console and hold it down for 10 seconds. This will force it to close. You can then press the Xbox button on the console or controller to restart it. This is called ” power cycling ” and should only be performed when your Xbox One is frozen and unresponsive.
Press the left arrow key to the left or press the left button on the arrow key to open the menu on the left side of the screen. Scroll down to the gear icon and press the A button to select “All Settings”.
Navigate to System> Console Information and Updates on the settings screen.
Select “Reset Console” to continue.
You will be asked how to reset the console. There are two options: “Reset and delete all content” and “Reset and keep my games and apps”.
The first option will completely wipe your device and restore it to the factory default state. This is ideal if you sell your console.
The second option resets the system to its default state and deletes all personal information. However, it will keep the games, apps, and updates you have installed. You no longer have to download games and game updates, which can save you dozens or even hundreds of GB of download bandwidth. This is ideal if you want to reset the Xbox One to solve the problem, or just want to delete your personal data without having to re-download for a long time.
After you select one of these options, your Xbox One will immediately begin to reset. If you do not want to reset it, please select “Cancel”.
Help, I forgot to factory reset!
If you can no longer have physical access to the Xbox One, but do not reset it to factory settings, you may need to remotely wipe it, just like remotely wiping your phone or PC. Unfortunately, you cannot perform a complete remote factory reset. However, you can disable access to your Xbox profile and your personal data.
You need to change the password of your Microsoft account to perform this operation. The next time someone tries to use your profile on the Xbox One console, they will need to log in with your new password. If they do not log in, they will not be able to access your personal data and their personal data, such as any files you store in OneDrive.
To do this, go to the Microsoft account website. Sign in with the same account you signed in to Xbox One. Go to Security and Privacy> Change Password. Provide a new password here.
People will no longer be able to access the personal data you saved on Xbox One without entering a new password, so they will not be able to access it. You must re-enter the new password on other devices and applications that you have signed in with your Microsoft account. For example, if you use this password to log in to Windows 10 and configure a PIN, you need to provide a new password before you can log in with the PIN. When necessary, you will be asked to enter a new password on other devices.
The options available for resetting the Xbox One are similar to the options for resetting the Windows 10 PC, which is not surprising, the Xbox One software is based on the underlying Windows 10.
